Best Practices for Messaging 🔗

When reaching out, please follow these guidelines to ensure effective communication. Regardless of the medium (messaging or emails, or physical meetings), the goal is to be clear and concise.

  1. State your agenda clearly: Begin your message with a concise statement of purpose.

  2. Do not ramble. Avoid unnecessary greetings: Skip “hi,” “hey”, “how are you” or “where are you?” and get to the point. Do not ramble. A good read is Tim Ferris’s article on the subject.

  3. Avoid over-communicating with low-quality information, or being a high-maintenance interlocutor.

  4. Be specific and direct: Clearly articulate what you need or what information you’re providing.

  5. Provide context: If relevant, briefly mention any background information or previous interactions.

  6. Use bullet points or numbered lists: This helps organize multiple points or questions.

  7. Respect time constraints: Be mindful that responses may not be immediate due to busy schedules, but also be on time for your appointments.

  8. Include any relevant deadlines: If your request is time-sensitive, mention this upfront. But remember, your urgencies are not my emergencies.

  9. Proofread before sending: Ensure your message is clear, concise, and error-free.

Remember, direct and well-structured communication is not only more efficient but also shows respect for the recipient’s time and attention. This approach is particularly appreciated given the current high volume of information being managed.
